Cherry’s Jubilee Net Proceeds to Go to Building Fund
A major construction project is currently underway at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. While meeting new state mandated earthquake standards, existing facilities will be upgraded to meet the needs of our region’s growing population. The Foundation has begun a Capital Campaign to raise $3 million for the building project. We hope that you will join us to make the proposed hospital campus a reality.
When the work is finished over the next 36 months, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital will meet all California earthquake standards through the year 2030 with shear walls for earthquake protection that are 10-12 inches wide and stretch from the original foundation in the basement to the third floor of some patient care areas. The main hospital entrance and lobby will be relocated to the Heart Center side and a beautiful Welcome Center will be added in Heart Lane. Other major changes will include an expanded and reconfigured L. M. Tynan Emergency Department; an additional state-of-the-art Harden operating room to accommodate our da Vinci Robotic Surgical System; a renovated and reconfigured Tom Merrill Lobby and a new location for the Gift Shop and Starbucks.
The Tynan Emergency Department (ED) is the first newly renovated area to open. The ED serves 45,000 patients a year requiring the additional beds and space. In the new ED, patient wait times will decrease to an average of 20 minutes. Several donor naming opportunities are available in the new ED now.
After many years in the same location, the Hospital main entrance and lobby will be expanded and moved to Heart Center Lane. The current main entrance and lobby must be torn down in order to make way for a seismic required shear wall. The new main entrance to the hospital will be through a Welcome Center. The Center will be an 11,650 square foot two story building that will be placed between the Downing Resource Building and the Hospital. The need for this new lobby space is critical. The new Center will be designed to receive walk-in admissions to the hospital as well as a comfortable area to meet and greet visitors. The information desk will be a resource for visitors and families who have patients in the hospital.
Patient/ visitors will drive to a valet station on a beautifully landscaped circular drive and enter the Welcome Center. There will be interactive elements inside including an aquarium feature, comfortable seating clusters, abundant natural lighting and attached meditation and therapy gardens. Also, within the Welcome Center will be a physician lounge / locker room, physician sleep rooms and other office and linen storage space. The projected timetable to build the Welcome Center is three years. We are attempting to construct the building to be totally self-sustaining by using “Green” energy such as solar arrays, wind turbines and roof top gardens.
