Corporate Pinewood Derby Challenge Joins Cherry’s Jubilee Pinewood Derby is the way Scouting teaches a young Cub Scout to use imagination while following the rules, to embrace competition while respecting his competitors and to take advantage of the experience that can be shared by older Scouts and even ‘old Dad’. A Cub Scout is given a block of pine wood and a simple wheel kit out of which he carves and crafts a speed racer. Pinewood Derby racers are not motorized – they free-fall down an inclined track to achieve speed. Building the car and racing are more fun than you can imagine, unless you’ve done it yourself.
So what is the Corporate Pinewood Derby Challenge? It’s the same block of wood, the same competitive race, only this time, adults are building the racers as an inspiration to hundreds of Scouts who will watch as spectators. The races will be held on Saturday and Sunday September 8th and 9th during Cherry’s Jubilee at Laguna Seca.
Awards will be given to the finalists in the speed and design categories. The winning cars will be displayed in a specially designed trophy case in locations all over the area.
Cherry’s To Host Second Annual Children’s Coloring Contest
This year the YMCA at their Salinas and Monterey facilities, as well as their summer camps will conduct a classic car themed coloring contest. Children will receive line drawings of many different classic cars and use their skills to color them. Last year over 150 children submitted their artwork in this event. Entrant’s artwork will be on display at Laguna Seca during this year’s festival. Entry forms can be picked up at the YMCA. |
